Past Events

18th March 2012
This was the date of our 2nd race meet.
Groups from across the entire region had been invited, but due to reasons unknown the day was a Beenleigh only event. Even though the weather was wet, it did not dampen the enthusiasm of the 30+ racers that competed. The event was broken into 3 classes – Joeys, Cubs and Open.

This year we introduced the new software timing system that was developed for us. This software allowed us not only to run the event more seamlessly but allowed us to track times for the
cars.

It was interesting to see these tiny vehicles reaching speeds around 13km/hr over the 9m track. We had a few crashes and event had a horse loose its head.

There were many wonderful car shapes and designs on the day, ranging from a T-Bucket to R2D2 , a Train to a Horse in a field, Classic cars and race cars. Wonderful effort to all on your cars. It never ceases to amaze the amount of effort people place into heir cars.
Once again a very special thanks to Bunyip who not only helped several people with their cars, but had to find time to make his own kids theirs, while also having time to make the great trophies that were presented on the day.

Another special thanks to wombat that helped Yvette and family get their cars made and ready for the day.

All in all it was a great day had by all, with the kids and parents alike screaming and yelling for their cars as they hurtled down the track.

See you all next year at our 3rd event. I'll leave you with a few photos of all the wonderful cars.

 09/10/2011 -  Inaugural Derby

Last weekend saw Beenleigh Cubs run its first ever Pinewood Derby. The Cubs were to build a car, weighing no more than 145g and within  a specific height, length and width.

We had 22 entries on the day and there were many fantastic looking cars too.

The races were broken up into 4 races per heat, and each cub would run their car on each lane. This allowed to test the track to see if each lane would run the same. This proved accurate.

Our Joey leader - Emu - provided the entertainment and we kicked off with a song and action dance.
All cars were scrutinized before they were entered to ensure they met the requirements.
We have to thank Kanga - Cub Regional Leader and Numbat for doing this for us.

Once sorted into the race classes, scout members and open we would have 15 cars for cubs and another 12 for open.

The cubs were asked to pick numbers from a bag to start on the grid for first heat. For the other three heats they would rotate one lane each race.

We had fast.cars, slow cars and ones that came off the track. The track had a malfunction at one stage with the start gate spring breaking, this was quickly repaired and races continued, plus the finish line electronic marker failed to pick up a car when needing to finalize results. So stewards  were called to check the race results.

Once the heat was over the car was examined by the technical team and it was found the holes in the car were the problem and a ice block stick was placed over the holes to fix the problem.

Once all the heats were over the four winners from each heat, were raced to define 1st ans 2nd place.
We had a last car race to where the slowest car was awarded a trophy.
In the end our winners for the day were:

Scout member races:

1st:Kaleb
2nd: Alex

Open
1st: Numbat
2nd: Samuel

Slowest car: Payton

We had special guests on the day, the.Torana.Club were along to see our.event. They were asked to judge a.best presented car, as to was Kanga for Region Scouts.

Torana club best presented went to Daniel.for his Lightening McQueen car. He had added.the Scout logo to the car for that winning touch.

Kanga's best presented went to Ashley's car.

In all it was a fun day and we will be doing it.again on March 18, 2012.
Thanks must go to Bunyip and Rama for their huge efforts in getting the track and day ready. They were each presented with a car as thanks, Rama was presented with Darth Vadar and Bunyip with a 56 Chevy.
Too all that assisted and took part thank you it was a fantastic event.
